The Story of "Charlenes"
We’ve loved every minute of our journey.
A Dream is Fufilled
Learning her recipes and tricks of the trade from her own parents over the years, in 2008 Charlene fulfilled her dream of opening her very own restaurant.
Her popular seafood chowder quickly became an even bigger hit with locals. As travelling visitors learned of Charlene's, they too stopped in and tasted the locally famed seafood chowder. Among these visitors Justin Trudeau, Alex Trebeck, Allan J. MacEachen, Jimmy Rankin, & Ashley MacIsaac to name a few.
You Gotta Eat Here
Four years after opening, Charlene's Restaurant was featured on Food Network Canada's first season of "You Gotta Eat Here" hosted by John Catucci. The episode showcases some of Charlene's popular dishes including the lobster roll, bucket of mud dessert, and her chowder of course. Following the first season of "You Gotta Eat Here", the show released a cookbook featuring the dishes from their episodes. You can purchase this cookbook in Chapters, Indigo, online and most book stores.
As Charlene's grew in popularity with travelling visitors, it also became more popular with the locals as well. Charlene began catering local events including weddings, birthdays, gatherings, corporate meetings, holiday parties, the Centennial Anniversary of Flight & the visit of the Cruising Club of America to name a few. Charlene is still catering many events today.
This photo was taken in 2010 when Justin Trudeau was in Baddeck, NS for a Liberal Caucus meeting. Charlene & her team catered this event. (Left to Right: Sharon Brummond, Charlene MacNeil, Bonnie MacNeil, Holly MacNeil, Justin Trudeau, Jillian Bustin, & Breagh MacAulay.)
10 Year Anniversary
Many happy guests have walked out of Charlene's door with full bellies over the years. With outstanding support of locals during low and high seasons & visitors travelling through that have stopped in multiple times in one day, Charlene and her team are now in their 10th year of business. Charlene's is also ranked #1 Restaurant in Whycocomagh.
We cannot thank you enough for your continuous support!
A New Adventure
With the celebration of the past 10 years in business, Charlene is onto new adventures. In 2018 she became a seasonal vendor at the Halifax Seaport Farmer's Market. On select days of the summer & fall Charlene participated as a vendor selling her famous seafood chowder to Haligonians & visiting cruise ship guests. Customers from all over the world are now singing the praises of Charlene's Famous Seafood Chowder.
10 family members dropped in for a lunch, there was an assortment ordered, but as the sign on this little place said” Best Seafood Chowder” they were not wrong. There were people who have lived and worked on the sea as well as a Chef amongst us and they all agreed that it was great. The scallop stir fry was amazing, the biscuits were a hit and fish was so fresh. Highly recommend!

I took a group of Residents to Dine at Charlene's on Friday and the Service was fantastic and so was the food. They certainly do make you feel at home. The Residents loved it!!! Thank you for your kindness and the yummy food!
My wife and I ride motorcycles. Charlene's is a must do stop. The Chowder there is simply the best we've ever had. Combine this with an attentive and friendly staff you definitely have a winning combination !! Thank you for making our rides a success!
We tried several chowders as it seems every town has someone that makes the best, but this one took the award! Literally, actually, they won a competition and won 1st place in all Cape Breton. The chowder was amazing- huge chunks of fish, crab, lobster, scallops and NO fillers( potatoes, etc).
